One of the main issues coming out of the US is the interoperability between various Electronic Health Records, which we now can see a shift in post covid -19. Read more here. In funding news Truepill has secured $25 million series B funding, to help them build API connected healthcare infrastructure. Co-founder and CEO Umar Afridi built a B-2-B model to create a direct to patient experience across the whole healthcare ecosystem. Kindbody a fertility and gynaecology based company has raised $32 million in series B funding and Mission Therapeutics, a Cambridge based, English drug discovery and development company has raised £12 million. The latest in health tech news, individuals with cystic fibrosis (CF) who are at a higher risk from coronavirus are being given spirometers to measure their lung capacity. VIRTI is mobilising an immersive training platform to rapidly upskill the NHS workforce to tackle COVID-19. The company has been awarded funding as part of the NHSX's TechForce 19 challenge. This week we farewelled a dear friend and leading member of the global health-tech innovation community, Michael Seres. NHS Highland have commissioned Skysports to partner with them and use their drones to deliver essentials required to fight the pandemic. The initial two week trial will include delivery of PPE and test kits to the beautiful, yet remote, Isle of Mull. Read more here. The global, crowdfunded, venture-investment platform (headquartered in Israel) will create an innovation fund. The fund will invest in new startups and pre-exisitng companies tackling the pandemic. The round was led by Seroba life sciences and funding will support the advancement of the product pipeline. Read more here. The 'digital divide' has become increasingly prominent in light of the recent pandemic, especially in countries with significant ageing populations. A child has been given the worlds first drone-delivered vaccine in Vanuatu. A registered nurse, Miriam Nampil vaccinates the child with a BCG vaccine to prevent tuberculosis and Hepatitis B. Non-acute health providers will be supported with technology and resources from eBay to enable PPE requests. eBay will work with the NHS Supply Chain, the Department for Health and Social Care (DHSC) and the Army and Ministry of Defence (MoD) to create an online portal to help ease the pressure of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) distribution. Digital Health startup ISLA have closed a pre-seed funding round of £250k to develop a ‘visual patient record’. The Isla platform is free to support with Covid-19 responses, if you are a health professional and would like more information, email hello@islacare.co.uk. With countries beginning to emerge from lockdown, governments have been introducing ways to mitigate the spread of the coronavirus. Healthcare enterprises around the world are turning to telemedicine to facilitate remote diagnosis and patient monitoring as the disease spreads. “Much like it has done for doctors assessing and treating patients for influenza – where its use has hit an all-time high – televisits can help doctors combat a coronavirus outbreak, even reaching patients in remote locations who have limited access to care,” explained by Dr. Samat Virk of MediSprout. The European Commission put out a call Friday for startups and small businesses which are developing technologies that could help combat the COVID-19 outbreak to apply for fast-track EU funding. More info here. AI vs. Coronavirus: How artificial intelligence is now helping in the fight against COVID-19. The COVID-19 Open Research Dataset initiative uses natural language processing to analyze scientific papers about coronavirus. The goal is to help researchers better analyze and understand a growing set of scholarly articles about coronavirus. Read more here. Africa’s largest innovation incubator, CcHub, will offer funding and engineering support to tech projects aimed at curbing COVID-19 and its social and economic impact. Read more here. In funding news, The European Investment Bank (EIB) will use its InnovFin Infectious Disease Finance Facility, to finance research on halting the spread of COVID-19, but also on cures and vaccine development. More here. €30 million has been allocated by the Spanish government to research projects on coronavirus, with €24 million going to the Carlos III Health Institute (ISCIII). "Matt Gould, NHSX CEO, recently convened CEOs and 12 heads of regulatory bodies to determine a list of priorities that could encourage innovation whilst maintaining compliance in the UK. It was highlighted that the NHS AI Lab would aim to play a crucial role in this journey. The summary of the session can be found in Matt Gould's blog post here. Unmind, a London-based workplace mental health platform, was founded in 2016 by Dr. NickTaylor. The company has raised € 9.1M. The platform provides small to large companies with a way to help manage and measure employees mental wellbeing through assessments that are scientifically-backed. Oxford VR, a company based in Oxford closes £10M in series A funding. The company was founded in 2017, as a spin out from Oxford University’s department of Psychiatry. They provide automated VR therapy that translates cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) through virtual reality to provide evidence based treatment. "Artificial Intelligence (AI) powered chatbots have been used to screen people for coronavirus. Currently, the chatbots have revealed a large number of people with the flu. In line with this the parent company Bespoke has launched an AI powered chatbot advisor Bebot to keep passengers informed about the coronavirus outbreak. Read more.
